Prof. RNDr. David Lukáš, CSc.

Czech scientist and university teacher. Leading expert in the field of physical principles of polymeric nanofibres formation. Author of many domestic, European and world patents and author of many important scientific publications. In teaching, he lectures and leads seminars in Physical Principles of Nanofibres Formation; Polymer Physics; Biophysics and Stereology. He is the guarantor of the follow-up Master’s degree programme in Bioengineering at the Faculty of Science, Humanities and Education of the Technical University of Liberec, both in Czech and in English. He holds professorships in two areas, namely Textile Engineering (1997) and Biophysics (2023). In recent years, he has lectured at Mae Fah Luan University – Thailand; the University of Alabama at Birmingham - USA and Clemson University - USA. He is an experienced leader of scientific research teams in both basic and applied research projects, both nationally and internationally. Prof. David Lukáš is Rector Emeritus of the Technical University of Liberec and is also a Fulbright Honorary Ambassador. In 2023, the President of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel, awarded the Medal for Merit of the First degree to prof. David Lukáš for his exceptionally meritorious service to the state in the field of science.

Nanofibrous Materials for Medical Applications

Brief introduction to uniqueness of nanofibrous materials for medical applications as scaffolds for tissue engineering, wound dressings and drug delivery systems. A quick historical overview - inspiration in nature etc. Brief introduction to different types of technologies for production of polymeric nanofibers (DC and AC electrospinning, Drawing of individual fibers, Solution Blow Spinning, Centrifugal Spinning,...). Examples of different material application, combination of technologies for different applications. Advantages and disadvantages of the introduced technologies. The advantages of using different technologies for specific applications such as wound dressing, dental floss, surgical floss, vascular bandages, bone and knee cartilage scaffolds, protective clothing, drug delivery systems, etc. will be described. The workshop will include a demonstration of a large number of different samples. Samples will also be prepared for individual participants to take away. The workshop will also include a demonstration of a basic device for in-situ application of nanofibers by Solution Blow Spinning and/or centrifugal spinning and/or production of individual fibers by Drawing technology. Brief introduction to sterilization, packaging and storage of nanofibrous samples for medical applications.
